Case IH 4246 - UCM – UCM (Universal Control Module): Right external fender switch open circuit/short to GND

The Universal Control Module (UCM) has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit for the right external fender switch (open circuit or short to ground). Because the voltage is outside the expected operating range, the UCM disables the remote fender switch for safety.

   Inspect the right rear fender switch for physical damage, such as a cracked housing from debris or water ingress

   Unplug the switch and inspect the connector pins for water, dirt, or green corrosion

   Test the wiring harness from the fender switch connector back to the UCM for continuity, specifically checking the 5V reference and signal return pins

   Check for continuity between the signal wire and the tractor chassis to test for a short to ground

   Bench test the switch for internal continuity when pressed to verify if it has failed internally

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent shorting any modules during repair.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the right external fender switch on the rear mudguard. You may need to remove the inner fender liner or protective trash shield to access the wiring pigtail.

   Disconnect and Clean

   Unplug the harness connector. Spray electrical contact cleaner into both ends of the plug to remove any dirt or moisture.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken or chafed wire (often found where the harness routes along the axle housing or under the cab), cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire, and seal it with dual-wall heat shrink tubing.

   Replace the Switch

   If the wiring tests good but the switch failed the bench test, unbolt the retaining nut/clips holding the switch to the fender housing, remove the old switch, and install the new one.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks firmly into place. Reinstall any protective shields.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the inactive fault codes from the UCM via the cab display. Test the fender switch to ensure the hitch/PTO responds correctly.
