Case IH 4247 - UCM – UCM: Right external fender switch short to Vbat

The control module is detecting a continuous 12-volt signal (Battery Voltage / Vbat) on the circuit dedicated to the right-hand external fender switch. A 'short to Vbat' means that either the switch has failed internally (fused contacts) or the wiring harness has chafed and is touching a live 12V power wire, causing the module to see a constant 'ON' or high-voltage state.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the right rear fender switch for physical damage, cracked rubber boots, or water ingress. These switches are exposed to the elements and frequently fail due to moisture causing internal shorts.

   Circuit Isolation Test: Disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the right fender switch. Turn the key ON and check the active fault codes. If the code changes from a 'short to Vbat' (e.g., 1078) to an 'open circuit' code (e.g., 1077 or 5006), the wiring is fine and the switch itself is internally shorted. If the 'short to Vbat' code remains active while the switch is unplugged, the short is located in the tractor's wiring harness between the switch connector and the UCM.

   Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the fender into the cab. Look for pinch points, chafed insulation, or areas where the wire might be rubbing against the chassis or a 12V power supply line.

   UCM Pin Check: Inspect the UCM connectors for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could be bridging a 12V pin to the switch signal pin.

   Disconnect battery

   If the switch is faulty: Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Disconnect switch harness

   Reach behind the right rear fender and disconnect the electrical pigtail from the fender switch.

   Remove faulty switch

   Depress the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws securing the switch to the fender housing and push the switch out.

   Install new switch

   Snap the new OEM switch into the fender housing.

   Reconnect harness

   Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector to prevent future moisture ingress, and plug the harness back in.

   Clear fault codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or the Electronic Service Tool (EST).

   Test function

   Test the remote PTO or hitch function to verify the repair.

   Locate wire damage

   If the wiring harness is faulty: With the battery disconnected, locate the chafed section of the wire identified during the diagnostic checks.

   Cut damaged wire

   Cut out the damaged section of the wire.

    Splice wire

    Splice in a new section of wire using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors.

    Secure wiring

    Wrap the repaired section in automotive-grade wire loom and secure it with zip ties away from moving parts or sharp chassis edges. (OEM clip part #47505757 can be used to secure fender switch wiring).
