Case IH 4248 - UCM – UCM: Right external fender switch unexpected value

The control module is receiving a signal from the right rear fender switch (typically used for remote PTO or 3-point hitch control) that falls outside the expected normal operating parameters. This is often caused by internal switch corrosion, water ingress, or partially chafed wiring.

   Visual Inspection: Check the right external fender switch for physical damage, sticking buttons, or signs of water ingress.

   Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness routing from the right fender switch to the UCM, especially behind the right rear cab mount where wires commonly get pinched or chafed.

   Circuit Isolation: In the tractor's diagnostic menu, temporarily turn the remote fender switch option to 'OFF', clear the codes, and see if the fault returns to isolate the issue between the external switch circuit and the UCM.

   Multimeter Testing: Disconnect the switch and test for expected resistance values across the switch terminals when open and closed. Check for continuity to ground on the signal wire to rule out a partial short.

   Disconnect power

   Turn off the tractor key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the switch

   Locate the right external fender switch on the rear fender housing.

   Disconnect the switch

   Reach behind the fender panel (or remove the retaining bezel, depending on the exact model) and disconnect the multi-pin electrical connector from the switch.

   Repair wiring harness

   If the wiring harness is damaged (e.g., pinched at the cab mount), cut out the damaged section, splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-route the harness to prevent future pinching. Secure it with zip ties or clips (OEM clip part # 47505757).

   Remove faulty switch

   If the switch itself is faulty, depress the retaining tabs on the switch body and push it out of the fender mounting hole.

   Install new switch

   Snap the new OEM replacement switch into the fender housing.

   Reconnect electrical connector

   Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector to prevent moisture ingress, and plug it into the new switch.

   Clear codes and test

   Reconnect the battery, power on the tractor, and use the diagnostic menu to clear the UCM fault codes. Test the fender switch to ensure proper PTO or hitch operation.
