Case IH 4253 - UCM – UCM: Left external fender switch active at key on

The Universal Control Module (UCM) detects an active signal from the left external fender switch immediately when the ignition key is turned on. This indicates the switch is either physically jammed/stuck on, or there is an electrical fault such as a short to Vbat (12V+) sending a false active signal.

   Visually inspect the left external fender switch (hitch or PTO control) to see if it is physically jammed, stuck, or damaged in the pressed position.

   Unplug the switch and the UCM connectors (e.g., connector 92) to check if water, dirt, or corrosion has bridged the pins.

   Test the wiring harness for a short to Vbat (12V+) or a short to ground.

   Use the tractor's instrument cluster diagnostic menu (e.g., channel 81) to verify if the UCM is properly detecting the fender switch input state.

   Turn ignition OFF

   Turn the ignition key switch OFF and ensure the tractor is not running.

   Clean and unplug switch

   Clean the area around the left fender switch and unplug its connector.

   Inspect connector

   Inspect the connector for water or dirt ingress; clean and dry if necessary.

   Replace switch if faulty

   If the switch button is physically jammed or tests as internally shorted (closed circuit when not pressed), remove and replace the switch.

   Trace wiring harness

   If the switch operates normally, trace the wiring harness back to the power supply of the UCM circuit to locate and repair any pinched wires causing a short to 12V+.

   Verify repair

   Plug the connections back in and turn the ignition key switch ON to verify the fault code has cleared.
