4301

Case IH 4301 – Transmission Controller or EHR / EDC: Side link switch not fitted

Issue description

The control module is software-configured to expect inputs from a side link switch, but the controller cannot detect the switch on the circuit. This indicates either an open circuit, a physically missing switch, or a software configuration mismatch.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • 580ST
  • 590ST
  • 695ST

Check the cause

  1. Verify Machine Configuration: Use the in-cab display or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the machine's configuration. If the tractor was not built with a hydraulic side link / lateral joint switch, the controller software may be incorrectly configured to expect one.

  2. Visual Inspection: Locate the side link switch wiring harness (typically near the rear 3-point hitch drop box/side link or the loader linkage). Inspect for torn wires, disconnected plugs, or heavy corrosion.

  3. Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the switch connector and the EDC/Transmission controller pins. Check for an open circuit or a short to ground.

  4. Fuse Check: Verify the 12V supply fuses to the EDC/Transmission controllers, as a blown fuse on the reference voltage circuit can cause the module to lose communication with the switch.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the machine on a firm, level surface. Lower all attachments (hitch, loader, or backhoe) to the ground. Shift the transmission into neutral, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Address Configuration

If the machine does not have a side link switch, connect the CNH EST laptop. Navigate to the Transmission/EDC configuration menu and change the side link switch setting to 'Not Fitted' or 'Not Installed'. Save the configuration and cycle the key.

  3. Test the Switch

If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector at the side link switch. Using a multimeter, test the switch for proper operation (it should show continuity when mechanically actuated and an open circuit when released).

  4. Replace the Switch

If the switch fails the continuity test, remove the mounting hardware, remove the faulty switch, and install the replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key to the ON position and use the diagnostic menu to clear the stored 4301 fault code. Verify that the code does not return during operation.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Side Link Switch / Lateral Joint Limit Switch

    87531922

Generic CNH rocker/limit switch example; exact fitment requires a VIN/Serial match.
