Case IH 4306 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) control module: Rear Remote No. 6 - Over Voltage

Issue description

Fault code 4306 indicates that the voltage supplied to or detected at the Rear Remote Control Valve No. 6 is exceeding the upper limit of the normal operating range. This over-voltage condition typically triggers when the system voltage spikes above 15 volts, or if there is a short-to-power in the valve's specific circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Check System Voltage: Verify the tractor's battery and charging system voltage at the battery terminals while the engine is running. If higher than 15 volts, the alternator regulator is likely faulty.

  2. Check for External Power: Verify that no external power supplies or jump-start packs are currently connected to the tractor's electrical system.

  3. Inspect Controller Power and Ground: Check the power supply and ground cavities at the remote hydraulic controller connector. Ensure there is a clean, solid connection to ground.

  4. Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the EHR controller to Rear Remote No. 6 for any chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short-to-power (battery voltage).

  5. Component Isolation: Swap the electrical connector from Remote No. 6 to another known-good remote valve (e.g., Remote No. 5). If the fault code changes to the corresponding code for the new valve, the issue is within the valve's solenoid/actuator. If the code remains 4306, the issue is in the wiring harness or the EHR controller.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Charging System Issues

    If the system voltage was found to be over 15V during diagnostics, replace the alternator or the alternator voltage regulator.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short-to-power was found in the harness leading to Remote No. 6, splice and repair the damaged wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace that section of the harness.

  3. Clean Grounds

    Disconnect, clean, and retighten the ground connections for the EHR controller to ensure proper grounding.

  4. Replace the EHR Valve

    If the wiring and charging system are functioning normally and the fault is isolated to the valve itself, the EHR valve (or its electronic actuator/solenoid) must be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    After repairs are made, use the electronic service tool or the tractor's display monitor to clear the fault codes. Restart the tractor and test the No. 6 remote for normal operation. If a new valve was installed, a valve calibration procedure must be performed via the tractor's display.
