Case IH 4309 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Remote): Rear Remote No. 6 - Open Center Position Not Reached

Issue description

The spool inside the rear remote control valve No. 6 has failed to reach the open center (or float) position. This indicates that the valve spool is physically unable to return to neutral/open center, which is typically caused by either incorrect hydraulic pressure in the system or a mechanical/electrical failure within the EHR valve itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235–340 Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (350–600 HP)
  • Case IH Skid Steer
  • Compact Track Loaders

Check the cause

  1. Check the EHR module for any other active error codes

  2. Make a note of all codes, clear them using an electronic service tool, and test the hydraulic system for normal operation

  3. Verify that the tractor's overall hydraulic pressure is correct and within OEM specifications

Repair steps

  1. Connect your diagnostic tool and clear the EHR fault codes.

Connect your diagnostic tool and clear the EHR fault codes.

  2. Cycle the rear remote No. 6 switch in the cab to see if the spool will actuate and return to the open center position.

Cycle the rear remote No. 6 switch in the cab to see if the spool will actuate and return to the open center position.

  3. Hook up a hydraulic pressure gauge to the tractor's test port to verify standby and working hydraulic pressures.

Hook up a hydraulic pressure gauge to the tractor's test port to verify standby and working hydraulic pressures. Incorrect pressure can prevent the spool from centering.

  4. If the hydraulic pressure is correct but the 4309 code persists, the EHR valve for remote No. 6 is internally faulty.

If the hydraulic pressure is correct but the 4309 code persists, the EHR valve for remote No. 6 is internally faulty.

  5. Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system.

Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system.

  6. Remove the faulty EHR spool valve slice (Remote No. 6) from the rear hydraulic stack.

Remove the faulty EHR spool valve slice (Remote No. 6) from the rear hydraulic stack.

  7. Install a replacement EHR valve, re-torque the stack tie-rods to spec, and recalibrate the remotes using the tractor's display or service tool.

Install a replacement EHR valve, re-torque the stack tie-rods to spec, and recalibrate the remotes using the tractor's display or service tool.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • EHR Valve / Rear Remote Spool Valve

Specific part numbers for the EHR valve slice vary heavily depending on the exact tractor model, year, and hydraulic pump flow configuration. You will need to pull the specific part number from the Case IH parts catalog using the tractor's PIN/Serial Number.
