Case IH 431 – Engine Controller (ECM / ENG): Hand Throttle (STD cab) Idle Validation Switches are both closed
Issue description
The idle validation switches are safety mechanisms built into the throttle assembly. They send redundant signals to the engine controller to verify whether the throttle is in the "idle" position or the "off-idle" (accelerating) position. It is an electrically invalid state for both switches to be closed at the exact same time; they should operate in opposition or transition properly. When the controller sees both closed simultaneously, it logs code 431 and will typically restrict throttle response for safety.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Case IH MX Magnum Series
- Case IH TG Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the hand/foot throttle assembly to the Engine Controller for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation.
Check Engine Controller pins B25 and B26 (dedicated inputs for Idle Validation Switches) for corrosion or pushed-out pins.
Unplug the throttle assembly and use a digital multimeter to test switch continuity while moving the lever; if both circuits read closed simultaneously, the switch has failed.
Check if fault code 432 is also active, which further indicates a failed internal throttle sensor assembly.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Throttle Assembly
Remove the necessary cab trim panels on the armrest console (for the hand throttle) or the floorboard (for the foot throttle) to access the throttle assembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the throttle potentiometer/idle validation switch.
Remove the Faulty Unit
Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the throttle potentiometer and switch assembly to the mechanical lever/pedal linkage.
Install the New Part
Mount the replacement throttle potentiometer/switch assembly. Ensure the mechanical linkage aligns correctly with the sensor's sweep path.
Reassemble
Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall the cab trim panels.
Calibrate
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Depending on the tractor model, you may need to perform a throttle calibration procedure via the armrest display or instrument cluster (failure to calibrate a new sensor can trigger ARM fault codes like 9013 or 9031).
Test
Start the engine, clear the inactive codes, and verify that the throttle responds normally without triggering code 431.
