Case IH 4337 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.8 - Open Center Position Not Reached

Issue description

This fault indicates that the spool inside the #8 rear hydraulic remote valve is failing to return to or reach its neutral (open center) position when commanded. This is typically caused by a failure in the electronic pilot head (proportional actuator) that drives the spool, a physical sticking/binding of the spool inside the valve body, or incorrect hydraulic pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum series
  • STX Steiger series
  • Quadtrac series
  • Puma series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check On-Board Diagnostics via the HH menu or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the code and check for accompanying electrical faults (e.g., under/over voltage or CAN bus communication errors).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and 4-pin connector from the EHR controller to the #8 remote valve pilot head for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing.

  3. Attempt to recalibrate the remote valves through the tractor's display. If the valve fails to calibrate or immediately locks up and throws the code again, the pilot head is likely the culprit.

  4. Perform a mechanical check to ensure the spool is not physically jammed by debris or excessive wear inside the valve body.

Repair steps

  1. Park and relieve pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Locate valve

Locate the #8 rear remote valve on the rear hydraulic stack.

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the pilot head (the electronic actuator mounted on top/end of the valve body).

  4. Remove pilot head

Remove the mounting screws securing the pilot head to the remote valve body and carefully remove the faulty actuator.

  5. Clean surface

Clean the mating surface on the valve body. Ensure no dirt enters the hydraulic system.

  6. Install new pilot head

Install the new pilot head assembly (ensure new O-rings are in place) and tighten the mounting screws.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Reassign valve

Turn the tractor on. You must reassign the valve addresses using the tractor's H-menu or the EST software so the EHR controller recognizes the new pilot head and maps it to the correct cab lever.

  9. Calibrate

Perform the remote valve calibration procedure to tune the new pilot head for proper hydraulic flow and neutral positioning.

  10. Test operation

Test the remote with an implement to ensure the code is cleared and the valve operates smoothly.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Proportional Actuator / Pilot Head Valve Assembly

    47643919

Replaces prior part numbers: 47434056, 84139664, 84173128, 84478195, 87577686. Fits Magnum, Steiger, Quadtrac, and Puma series tractors. Includes a 4-pin connector and mounting plate.

  • Hydraulic Remote Valve Assembly (Main Body)

If the internal spool is scored or the valve body is damaged beyond the pilot head, the entire remote valve section may need to be replaced. Part numbers vary heavily by exact tractor chassis and pump flow rating.
