Case IH 4351 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.7 - Valve Spool Not Calibrated

Issue description

This condition occurs when the electronic control system loses the stored calibration values for the 7th rear remote valve's spool position. The controller can no longer accurately determine the neutral, extend, retract, or float positions of the spool. As a safety measure, the system will typically lock out hydraulic functions for that specific remote to prevent unintended implement movement.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Warm up the hydraulic system: Calibration cannot be successfully performed with cold oil. Ensure the tractor's hydraulic fluid is at normal operating temperature.

  2. Inspect the armrest lever/potentiometer: Verify that the lever moves smoothly into all detents without binding, as a failing potentiometer is a highly common cause of lost calibration.

  3. Inspect the pilot head: Check the electronic actuator module mounted directly on the remote valve block at the rear of the tractor for damaged wiring harnesses, loose connectors, or signs of internal hydraulic fluid leakage.

  4. Perform a swap test: Swap the electrical connector from Remote No. 7 to another known-good remote valve (like No. 6 or No. 8). If the fault follows the valve, the pilot head or spool is faulty. If the fault stays with the No. 7 circuit, the issue is likely in the armrest switch or wiring harness.

  5. Check for voltage codes: Verify there are no underlying low battery voltage codes (e.g., SPN 168), as voltage drops during cranking can cause the EHR module to drop its calibration memory.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare for calibration

Park the tractor on level ground, apply the parking brake, and disconnect any implements from the rear remotes. Ensure the engine is running and the hydraulic oil is warm.

  2. Enter diagnostic mode

Plug the diagnostic connector (e.g., CAS2806 or 380000843) into the diagnostic port to enter the tractor's diagnostic mode.

  3. Navigate to calibration menu

Navigate to the 'HH' menu on the A-post instrument cluster or AFS display, and select the 'H1' (Valve Calibration) menu. Select the symbol for Rear Remote No. 7.

  4. Perform calibration sequence

Follow the on-screen prompts to move the armrest lever fully into the extend, retract, and float detents, holding it as instructed so the system can learn the potentiometer voltages.

  5. Save calibration values

Once the display indicates the calibration is complete, turn the key OFF and wait at least 30 seconds for the controller to save the new values to memory. Restart and test.

  6. Replace faulty components

If the valve refuses to calibrate (e.g., the display hangs on a specific step) or the fault returns immediately, replace the faulty component identified during your swap test (most commonly the Remote Valve Pilot Head or the Armrest Control Lever).

  7. Recalibrate new components

After installing the new part, you must repeat the H1 calibration procedure from Step 1, as the EHR controller needs to learn the voltages of the new component.
