Case IH 4361 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Reverse Pump Control Valves (Directional) Solenoid Right (A) Supply Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected an open circuit in the power supply line to the right-hand directional solenoid (Solenoid A) on the reverse pump control valve, indicating the electrical connection is broken, disconnected, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the UCM to the hydrostatic pump control valves for chafed wires, rodent damage, or pinched lines.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the right reverse pump control solenoid (A) and check for loose pins, pushed-back terminals, water intrusion, or corrosion.

  3. Measure the resistance across the two pins of the solenoid coil using a digital multimeter. An infinite (OL) reading indicates an internal open circuit.

  4. Check the continuity of the supply and ground wires from the solenoid connector back to the UCM harness.

  5. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and command a reverse movement to verify if the UCM is sending the correct supply voltage to the connector.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower all attachments to the ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Pump

    Tilt the cab or open the access panels required to reach the hydrostatic drive pump assembly.

  3. Locate the Solenoid

    Identify the right-hand reverse directional control valve block on the pump. Locate Solenoid A (refer to your specific model's hydraulic schematic to ensure you are not pulling the forward or left-side solenoid).

  4. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or screw at the end of the valve stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the valve cartridge to replace just the coil, which prevents fluid loss).

  5. Installation

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem. Install and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can distort the coil).

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Testing

    Clear the UCM fault codes using an electronic service tool (EST) or the machine's onboard diagnostic display. Start the machine and test the right-side reverse drive function to ensure the code does not return.
