Case IH 4381 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Reverse Pump Control Valves (Directional) Pumps Reverse Solenoid(s) are Shorted to Power
Issue description
The control module is detecting higher-than-expected voltage on the return circuit for the reverse directional pump control solenoids, typically caused by a chafed wiring harness shorting to a 12V power source or an internally failed solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading from the UCM to the hydrostatic drive pump control valves for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the harness at the reverse pump control solenoids, turn the key to the ON position (engine off), and check the return pin on the harness side for voltage. If 12V is present, the harness is shorted to power.
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the reverse pump control solenoid. Compare to OEM specifications (typically 5-10 ohms). If resistance is near 0, the solenoid is internally shorted.
Disconnect the harness at the UCM and check for continuity between the solenoid return pin and the main power pins to rule out an internal short inside the UCM.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorting during repair.
Access the Pump Control Valves
Lift and secure the cab (using the mechanical cab lock) to access the hydrostatic drive pumps located in the belly of the machine.
Address the Faulty Component
If the harness is shorted: Locate the chafed section of the wire, cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire of the same gauge, seal it with dual-wall heat shrink, and reroute or add protective loom. If the solenoid is shorted: Thoroughly clean the area around the directional control valve, remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the old solenoid off.
Install New Solenoid
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications (do not overtighten, as this can distort the valve spool).
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the electrical connector, lower the cab, and reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the instrument cluster diagnostic menu to clear the inactive 4381 fault code. Test drive the machine in reverse to ensure proper operation.
