Case IH 4401 – Instrument Cluster (IC) or Universal Control Module (UCM): Park Brake (Mechanical Machines) Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
The machine's control system has detected a break in the electrical circuit responsible for actuating the parking brake solenoid. When the controller attempts to send a 12V signal to release or engage the parking brake, no current flows. This underlying condition is typically caused by a burned-out solenoid coil (internal break), a disconnected wiring harness plug, or a severed wire between the controller and the solenoid. Because the circuit is open, the parking brake will usually default to its mechanical engaged (locked) state for safety.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the park brake solenoid valve electrical connector for disconnected plugs, backed-out pins, or severe corrosion.
Perform a coil resistance test by disconnecting the wiring harness and measuring resistance across the solenoid coil pins (an 'O.L.' reading indicates an internal open circuit).
Test the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the IC or UCM to locate any broken wires.
Perform a voltage check with the key ON by commanding the park brake to release and checking for 12V at the harness connector.
Repair steps
Safely park the machine on level ground, turn off the engine, and remove the key.
Locate the park brake solenoid valve assembly.
Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid.
Remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid valve stem.
Perform this if your diagnostics proved the coil is dead (open).
Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.
Slide the new OEM replacement coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut.
If the entire cartridge valve is faulty, unthread the old valve from the block, install the new valve with fresh O-rings, and attach the coil.
Locate the break and repair it using weather-resistant splice connectors.
Perform this if the issue was a broken wire in the harness rather than the coil.
Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid.
Turn the ignition on, clear the stored 4401 fault code via the instrument cluster or service tool, and test the park brake switch to ensure proper engagement and release.
