Case IH 442 – ECM: Battery Voltage Is Too High
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a system supply voltage exceeding the maximum safe threshold, typically greater than 16.2 volts. This condition is almost always caused by an overcharging alternator, a failed voltage regulator, or an external power source such as a 24V jump-start box being left connected to the machine.

Check the cause
Check for external sources by ensuring no external battery charger, jump-pack, or 24-volt jump-starting equipment is currently connected to the tractor batteries.
Perform a resting voltage test with the engine off using a multimeter to check the resting voltage at the batteries, which should be around 12.6V.
Perform a running voltage test by starting the engine and measuring the voltage at the battery terminals; if it reads higher than 15.5V to 16.2V, the alternator is overcharging.
Inspect battery positive wiring to ensure it is not accidentally shorted to an external higher voltage source, and check the ECM harness connectors for corrosion or bridging.
Repair steps
Stop the engine
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect any external chargers.
Disconnect the batteries
Disconnect the negative battery cables to protect the ECM and other sensitive electronics from further high-voltage damage.
Inspect the alternator connections
Check the wiring at the back of the alternator. Ensure the voltage sense wire is intact, as a broken sense wire can cause the regulator to run wild and overcharge the system.
Replace the alternator or voltage regulator
If the running voltage test confirmed an output of 16.2+ volts and the wiring is intact, the alternator internal voltage regulator has failed. Remove the serpentine belt, disconnect the alternator wiring, unbolt the alternator, and install a replacement unit.
Clean ECM contacts
As a precaution, remove the connector from the ECM, inspect and clean the pins, and reconnect the harness.
Re-test
Reconnect the batteries, start the tractor, and verify with a multimeter that the charging voltage has stabilized between 13.5V and 14.5V. The active 442 code should now move to an inactive or stored state.
