Case IH 444 – Engine Control Module (ENG / ECM): Low voltage detected at OEM 5 volt supply

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the 5-volt reference supply voltage provided to the OEM engine sensors has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold (typically below 4.75 VDC). Because multiple sensors share this single 5-volt supply circuit (such as the fuel rail pressure sensor, boost pressure sensor, and crankshaft/camshaft position sensors), a short in any one of these sensors or the wiring harness will pull the voltage down for the entire circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes using an electronic service tool (EST or INSITE) to see if a specific sensor has failed (e.g., Code 451/452 or 1562).

  2. Isolate the sensors by disconnecting them on the 5-volt supply circuit one at a time, starting with the fuel rail pressure sensor and boost pressure sensor.

  3. Measure voltage from the +5 volt SUPPLY pin to the RETURN pin at the sensor connector of the engine harness after disconnecting each sensor. If voltage returns to the normal 4.75 to 5.25 VDC range, the disconnected sensor is internally shorted.

  4. Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, short-to-ground conditions, dirty pins, or damaged connector locking tabs if disconnecting sensors does not restore the voltage.

  5. Test the ECM by measuring the 5-volt supply directly at the ECM engine connector. If the voltage is still below 4.75 VDC with the harness disconnected, the ECM itself has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the ignition key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate faulty component

    Based on the diagnostic isolation test, locate the faulty component (the shorted sensor or the damaged section of the wiring harness).

  3. Replace shorted sensor

    If a sensor is shorted: Remove the faulty sensor (e.g., fuel pressure or boost pressure sensor) and install the OEM replacement. Torque to the manufacturer's specification.

  4. Repair or replace damaged harness

    If the harness is damaged: Repair the shorted wire using approved splicing and heat-shrink methods, or replace the affected engine harness section.

  5. Reconnect components

    Reconnect all sensor connectors and the battery.

  6. Clear fault codes

    Turn the key on and use your diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive fault codes.

  7. Verify repair

    Run the engine and verify that the 5-volt supply remains stable between 4.75 and 5.25 VDC and that Fault Code 444 does not return.
