Case IH 45 – TMF (Transmission Management Function) Controller or Hitch Controller (EDC/Hitch): Hitch calibration attempted when the engine is not running or engine speed signal is failed

Issue description

The operator initiated the rear hitch calibration procedure, but the controller aborted it because it either detects 0 RPM (the engine is off) or the engine speed signal being sent to the controller is missing/corrupted.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • STX Steiger Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the engine is actually running when attempting the hitch calibration

  2. Check the engine RPM display on the instrumentation controller/dash while the engine is running for zero, unstable, or incorrect readings

  3. Check for active engine fault codes, specifically ENG 115 (Engine Speed Sensor or Cam Sensor is failed)

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the engine speed sensor for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

Repair steps

  1. Start the Engine

If you were attempting calibration with the key ON but the engine OFF, simply start the engine and restart the calibration procedure.

  2. Diagnose the Signal Loss

If the engine is running but the code persists, locate the engine speed sensor on the engine block.

  3. Test the Harness

Disconnect the sensor and test the wiring harness back to the engine controller for continuity and shorts.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the instrument cluster shows no RPM (or you have an active ENG 115 code), replace the engine speed sensor.

  5. Re-calibrate

Once the RPM signal is restored, clear the fault codes and re-attempt the hitch calibration procedure with the engine running and the transmission oil at the correct operating temperature.
