4504

Case IH 4504 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Remote) Controller or Armrest Controller / Auxiliary Valve Controller: Front remote no. 1 - under voltage

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the Front Remote Valve #1 control circuit (specifically the spool position potentiometer or the armrest control lever) has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground, or a complete failure of the potentiometer.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Magnum Series (MX / TG)
  • Maxxum / MXM Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at Front Remote Valve #1 for pushed-back pins, corrosion, moisture ingress, or chafed wires shorting against the tractor chassis.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and turn the key ON. Check the reference voltage pin at the connector; it should receive a steady 5V reference from the controller. If 0V is present, the issue is in the wiring harness or the controller.

  3. Check the continuity of the signal wire from the valve connector back to the EHR/Armrest controller to rule out an open circuit, and test for a short to ground.

  4. Swap the electrical connector from Front Remote #1 to Front Remote #2 (if equipped). If the fault code changes to the corresponding code for Remote #2, the potentiometer/actuator on Valve #1 is internally failed. If code 4504 remains, the fault is in the tractor's wiring harness or the controller itself.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Valve

Locate the front remote valve block. Clean the area around Remote Valve #1 thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the retaining screws holding the potentiometer/actuator cap to the spool valve body.

  4. Install the New Part

Install the replacement potentiometer, ensuring the mechanical linkage/pin aligns correctly with the spool. Tighten the retaining screws to OEM torque specs.

  5. Reconnect

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery.

  6. Calibration

Enter the tractor's H-Menu (Calibration Menu) via the instrument cluster or Pro 700/1200 display. Run the remote valve calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new potentiometer's neutral, full-extend, and full-retract voltage limits.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the stored 4504 fault code and test the hydraulic remote for proper operation.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Remote Valve Potentiometer / Spool Position Sensor

On some newer electro-hydraulic remotes, the potentiometer is not serviced separately and requires replacing the entire electronic actuator head/driver assembly.
