4507

Case IH 4507 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Front remote no. 1 - spool movement too high

Issue description

The system has detected that the internal spool of the #1 front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve has traveled beyond its calibrated maximum physical limit. The controller monitors this movement via a position potentiometer mounted on the valve. When the sensor voltage indicates the spool has overshot its expected range, the system logs this code and will typically lock out or disable the #1 remote valve to prevent hydraulic damage until the tractor is restarted.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma series
  • Magnum series
  • Steiger / Quadtrac series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check for secondary EHR codes (e.g., 4511, 4510, 4512) that might pinpoint an electrical failure

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the #1 front remote valve for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or wire chafing

  3. Monitor live potentiometer voltage for remote #1 using the EST or onboard diagnostic screen (look for erratic jumps or readings outside 0.5V - 4.5V)

  4. Attempt to run the EHR valve calibration procedure to see if the spool can find its center/neutral

  5. Swap the electrical pilot head/actuator from remote #1 to remote #2 to see if the fault code follows the actuator

Repair steps

  1. Relieve hydraulic pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Locate valve section #1

Locate the front remote valve stack and identify valve section #1.

  3. Clean the area

Thoroughly clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the pilot head (the electronic actuator/potentiometer module bolted to the top or end of the valve section).

  5. Remove faulty pilot head

Unbolt and remove the faulty pilot head/potentiometer assembly from the valve body. (Be prepared with a rag to catch a small amount of residual hydraulic oil).

  6. Inspect mechanical spool

Inspect the mechanical spool inside the valve body to ensure it moves freely and is not physically jammed by debris or a broken return spring.

  7. Install new pilot head

Install the new pilot head/potentiometer module onto the valve body and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect electrical harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Perform EHR Valve Calibration

Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and use the EST laptop or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to perform the EHR Valve Calibration. The controller must learn the travel limits of the new potentiometer.

  10. Test the remote

Start the tractor, apply a hydraulic load, and test the #1 remote to ensure smooth operation and that the 4507 code does not return.
