4508

Case IH 4508 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller or Armrest Controller (ATC): Front remote no. 1 - float position not reached

Issue description

The Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) controller commanded the spool for the #1 front remote valve to enter the "float" position, but the internal position sensor detected that the spool physically failed to travel far enough to reach that state.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the Valve: Switch your implement hoses to a different remote (e.g., Remote #2 or #3) to verify that the implement functions normally and that the issue is strictly isolated to the #1 valve slice.

  2. Check the Controls: Ensure the in-cab switch or lever is operating smoothly. Jerky or erratic physical inputs can sometimes cause the controller to misread the command.

  3. Inspect Wiring: Check the 4-pin connector and wiring harness going to the #1 remote valve actuator for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing.

  4. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for related codes on Remote #1, such as 4510 (faulty actuator/driver), 4511 (defective potentiometer), or 4512 (unable to reach neutral), which confirm a total failure of the pilot head.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and cycle the remote levers to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure. Disconnect the battery.

  2. Remove the Faulty Actuator

Locate the EHR valve stack. Disconnect the electrical harness from the #1 remote valve pilot head. Unbolt and remove the actuator from the valve slice.

  3. Install the New Actuator

Mount the new proportional actuator to the valve slice, ensuring the O-rings/seals are properly seated, and torque the mounting bolts to spec. Reconnect the 4-pin electrical connector.

  4. Reassign Valve Addresses

Power on the tractor. You must use the tractor's display monitor or a service tool to reassign the valve addresses so the EHR controller recognizes the new pilot head and knows which cab lever controls it.

  5. Perform Valve Calibration

Run the EHR valve calibration procedure. This requires the controller to learn the new spool travel limits (extend, retract, neutral, and float) to tune the valve for proper flow.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the 4508 fault code from the memory and test the remote in the float position to verify the repair.
