Case IH 451 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Pressure Sensor voltage is too high
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the signal voltage from the fuel rail pressure sensor is above the normal operating range (typically exceeding the 4.75 to 5.25 VDC sensor supply range). This usually points to a short to a voltage source, an open return circuit, or a failed sensor.

Check the cause
Check for Sensor Supply Faults: Connect an electronic service tool. If a sensor supply fault code (such as Code 227) is active alongside 451, troubleshoot the 5-volt supply circuit first.
Inspect the Wiring Harness (Crucial Step): Thoroughly inspect the wiring at or near the fuel rail pressure sensor engine wire harness connector. Wires can be broken internally while the outer insulation remains completely intact.
Check Connector Pins: Inspect both the sensor connector pins and the ECM harness connector pins for dirt, corrosion, or physical damage.
Verify Voltage: Measure the sensor supply voltage and return circuit. It should read between 4.75 and 5.25 VDC.
Repair steps
Turn the keyswitch ON and connect your diagnostic service tool.
Read active fault codes.
If Code 451 is active without supply codes, proceed to the sensor.
Disconnect the fuel rail pressure sensor and inspect the pins.
Clean them if dirty.
Test the wiring harness for continuity and shorts.
Pay special attention to the connector pigtail. If internal wire damage is found near the connector (as per the TSB), splice in a new electrical repair connector/terminal.
Test the ECM response.
With the sensor disconnected, check if the fault code changes to "voltage too low" (Code 452). If the ECM responds correctly, the wiring and ECM are likely good.
Replace the sensor.
If the wiring harness, connectors, and ECM pins all test good and supply voltage is correct, the fuel pressure sensor itself has failed internally and must be replaced.
Clear codes.
Reconnect all components, turn the key ON, and clear the inactive fault codes to verify the repair.
