4513

Case IH 4513 – Primary Hydraulic Power System / Electro-Hydraulic Remote Valve Controller: Front remote no. 1 - spool not in neutral at key on

Issue description

When the tractor's ignition key is turned to the ON position, the system runs a startup safety check. This code triggers because the controller detects an incorrect value indicating that the spool for the first front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve is not resting in its centered (neutral) position. This is a safety mechanism to prevent unintended hydraulic movement (such as a front loader or implement suddenly dropping or lifting) upon startup.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (125, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, 7100-8900)
  • Case IH Farmall Series (40, 45, 50, 115U)

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the in-cab joystick or control lever for Front Remote No. 1 is physically returning to the neutral position and is not obstructed by debris or a damaged linkage.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness at the front/mid-mount remote valve block for damaged cables, corrosion, or a disconnected plug at the spool actuator/potentiometer.

  3. Connect the diagnostic service switch (special tool 380000843) to access the 'HH MENU' and check the live potentiometer reading for Front Remote No. 1.

  4. Determine if the spool itself is mechanically sticking inside the valve block due to hydraulic contamination or a broken detent/centering spring.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all front implements (like a loader) to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure, and turn the key OFF.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the Front Remote No. 1 valve block area (often located mid-mount) using compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Electrical Testing

Disconnect the electrical connector from the spool's potentiometer. Test the wiring harness for proper voltage and continuity back to the controller.

  4. Replace the Potentiometer

If the diagnostic menu showed an incorrect neutral value but the spool is physically centered, unbolt and replace the spool potentiometer/sensor.

  5. Inspect for Mechanical Failure

If the spool is physically binding, carefully remove the valve end cap. Inspect the centering spring (detent spring) and the spool for scoring or debris. Clean the spool and valve bore. Replace the centering spring if broken, or the entire valve section if the bore is heavily scored.

  6. Reassembly & Calibration

Reassemble the valve components and reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key ON, clear the fault codes, and perform the electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve calibration procedure to teach the controller the new neutral, extend, and retract values.
