Case IH 4520 – CCM (Central Control Module) or MTA (Multi-Tractor Architecture) controller: Front remote no. 2 - spool movement too low
Issue description
This code indicates that the electronic controller has commanded the spool inside the #2 front remote hydraulic valve to move, but the feedback from the valve's internal position potentiometer shows that the spool is either not moving as far as commanded or is moving too slowly. This is typically caused by mechanical binding inside the valve, a failing spool position potentiometer, or a wiring issue preventing full voltage from reaching the valve actuator.

Check the cause
Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Ensure there is no physical debris blocking the valve and that the remote is not being manually overridden or stuck.
Wiring & Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the #2 front remote valve for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins. Low voltage can cause slow spool movement.
Swap Test: Swap the electrical connections between the #2 front remote and a known-good remote (like #1 or #3). If the fault code changes to the other remote (e.g., code 4506 for remote #1), the issue is inside the valve itself (potentiometer or mechanical binding). If the code remains 4520, the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness or the controller.
Diagnostic Menu (HH Menu): Enter the tractor's 'HH Menu' (diagnostic mode) to view the live potentiometer readings for the #2 front remote. Watch the values as you command the valve; erratic, jumping, or out-of-range values confirm a failed potentiometer.
Calibration Attempt: Attempt to run the remote valve calibration procedure through the tractor's display. If the valve fails calibration, replacement is necessary.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the tractor and cycle the remote levers/buttons to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.
Access the Valve
Locate the front remote valve stack. Clean the area thoroughly around the #2 valve slice to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect Electronics
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the #2 remote valve actuator/potentiometer assembly.
Remove the Component
If the potentiometer/actuator cap is serviceable separately: Remove the retaining screws holding the electronic cap to the valve body and carefully slide it off the spool. If the valve is a sealed unit (common on newer Magnums/Pumas): Unbolt the tie-rods holding the remote valve stack together and remove the entire #2 valve slice.
Install New Part
Install the new potentiometer or replacement valve slice. Replace any O-rings between the valve slices if the stack was separated.
Reassemble and Torque
Re-torque the valve stack tie-rods to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.
Reprogram and Calibrate
Turn the key on. You must perform a remote valve calibration using the tractor's armrest display or the EST (Electronic Service Tool) so the controller can learn the new potentiometer's neutral, maximum extend, and maximum retract positions. Note: In some cases, replacing a single remote valve with a newer revision requires updating the software for the entire valve stack so they can communicate properly on the CAN bus.
