Case IH 4522 – Front Electronic Hydraulic Remote Valves: Front remote no. 2 - float position not reached.
Issue description
The electro-hydraulic remote valve (specifically the mid-mount remote control valve) for front remote #2 has inadequate travel. The system's position sensor (potentiometer) is detecting that the spool inside the valve is physically failing to travel far enough to reach the designated float position, or the sensor itself is failing to read the correct voltage value for that position.

Check the cause
Relieve Pressure: Before doing anything, stop the tractor engine and cycle the remote valve lever through all positions (Raise, Neutral, Lower, and Float) to exhaust any residual pressure in the hydraulic system.
Visual & Electrical Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the front remote #2 valve. Look for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing that could distort the potentiometer's voltage signal.
Potentiometer Reading Check: Using the tractor's on-board HH Menu (diagnostic menu) or the Electronic Service Tool (EST), observe the live potentiometer readings for front remote #2 while commanding the valve. Check if the voltage smoothly transitions or if it drops out/spikes.
Attempt Calibration: Run the remote valve calibration procedure. Sometimes, a software drift occurs, and recalibrating the spool travel limits can clear the code.
Mechanical Binding Check: If calibration fails, the spool may be physically binding due to debris, a broken centering spring, or internal scoring.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Ensure the engine is off and cycle the remote levers to relieve all hydraulic pressure.
Access the Valve
Locate the mid-mount / front remote valve stack. Identify the specific slice for remote #2.
Remove the Actuator/Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness from the remote #2 valve actuator. Carefully unbolt and remove the electronic actuator/potentiometer cap from the rear of the valve spool.
Inspect the Spool
Check the exposed end of the spool. Attempt to move it manually (if applicable) to ensure it slides smoothly without binding. If the spool is stuck or binding, the valve section will need to be removed, disassembled, cleaned, and resealed (or replaced if scoring is severe). If the spool moves freely, the fault is almost certainly a failed potentiometer/actuator assembly.
Replace the Faulty Component
Install the new potentiometer/actuator onto the valve spool, ensuring the mechanical linkage (often a half-moon shaft or pin) aligns correctly with the sensor. Torque the mounting screws to OEM spec.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor.
Calibrate
You must perform a hydraulic remote valve calibration using the tractor's HH diagnostic menu or EST laptop. The controller needs to learn the new sensor's specific voltage values for Neutral, Extend, Retract, and Float.
