4526

Case IH 4526 – Armrest Control Module or EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) / Auxiliary Hydraulic Controller: Front remote no. 2 - unable to reach neutral

Issue description

The Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve spool for the second front remote is physically or electronically failing to return to its center (neutral) position. This is typically caused by mechanical binding of the spool due to dirt/debris, over-torqued tie bolts, or a faulty actuator/sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
  • Steiger series
  • Magnum series
  • Maxxum series
  • Farmall series (115U Pro EP)
  • CVX series

Check the cause

  1. Verify maintenance history to see if the hydraulic valve stack was recently serviced (over-torqued tie bolts can warp the housing and cause binding).

  2. Inspect hydraulic fluid and filters for contamination, which is a leading cause of sticking valve spools.

  3. Connect an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor spool position voltage and command the valve manually to isolate a mechanical jam from a sensor failure.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing the valve stack.

  2. Check Tie Bolt Torque

If the valve block was recently serviced, loosen the tie bolts on the front remote valve stack and re-torque them strictly to the factory specification to relieve any housing distortion.

  3. Inspect and Clean

If contamination is suspected, remove the Front Remote No. 2 valve section. Disassemble and inspect the spool for scoring, metal shavings, or debris. Clean the spool and bore thoroughly.

  4. Address Contamination

If debris is found, flush the hydraulic system and replace the hydraulic fluid and transmission/hydraulic filters to prevent a recurrence.

  5. Replace Valve

If the spool is heavily scored, or if the electronic actuator/potentiometer has failed and cannot be serviced separately, replace the EHR valve section.

  6. Clear and Calibrate

Once reassembled, use the Electronic Service Tool to clear fault code 4526. Perform a hydraulic valve calibration so the controller can relearn the exact neutral position of the new or cleaned spool. Test the system for normal operation.
