Case IH 4528 – Armrest Control Unit (ARU) or Implement Control Unit (ICU): Front remote no. 3 - no control message received
Issue description
This code indicates a CAN bus communication failure. The tractor's control network is not receiving the expected electronic control messages from the Front Remote Valve #3. This usually means the electronic control section on the valve has lost power, lost its ground, suffered a wiring harness failure on the CAN bus lines, or the valve's internal circuit board has failed.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma Series: 115, 125, 140, 155, 165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 215, 220, 225, 230 (CVX and Multicontroller models)
- Maxxum Series: MXU and standard Maxxum models with electronic remotes
- Magnum Series: MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, 280, 310
- Steiger Series: 350 to 600 horsepower models
Check the cause
Locate the front remote valve stack and visually inspect the electrical connector plugging into Front Remote #3 for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or water ingress.
Using a multimeter, verify that the valve is receiving 12V power and a solid ground.
Check the CAN High and CAN Low pins for proper voltage (typically around 2.5V) and continuity back to the Armrest Control Unit.
Perform a swap test to isolate the issue: swap the electrical connector from Front Remote #3 with Front Remote #2 (or #1). If the fault code changes to 4514, the valve's electronic head is faulty. If code 4528 remains, the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness or the Armrest controller.
Check for related CAN bus or voltage codes (e.g., 4532 Undervoltage, 4530 EEPROM error) which might indicate a broader electrical issue rather than a single failed valve.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the remote levers/buttons with the key on (engine off). Disconnect the battery.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the front remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the faulty Front Remote #3 valve section.
Remove the Valve Section
Remove the tie-bolts holding the hydraulic valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty electronic remote valve section.
Install the New Valve
Install the replacement electronic valve section. Crucial: Always use fresh O-rings between the valve slices to prevent internal and external hydraulic leaks.
Reassembly
Reinstall and torque the tie-bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Bleed and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery and start the tractor. Bleed the hydraulic system of any trapped air. Use the AFS Pro display or dealer service tool to calibrate the new remote valve so the Armrest controller recognizes its spool travel limits.
