4538

Case IH 4538 – Auxiliary (AUX) Controller: Front remote no. 3 - driver faulty

Issue description

This code indicates a failure in the electrical driver circuit that controls the proportional solenoid (pilot head) for the #3 front remote hydraulic valve. The controller is detecting an abnormal electrical condition on this specific output circuit, which typically means an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or excessive resistance in the wiring or the solenoid coil itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Maxxum series
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Magnum / MX series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the AUX controller and the front remote valve #3 for physical damage, chafing, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the #3 front remote valve solenoid and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion.

  3. Swap the solenoid/pilot head from front remote #3 with a known good remote (such as #1 or #2). If the fault code changes to the new location, the solenoid is faulty. If it remains 4538, the issue is in the wiring or controller.

  4. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the solenoid coil, test the harness for continuity from the valve connector back to the AUX controller, and check for shorts to ground or power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery negative cable before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted wire, repair the wiring harness or replace the EHR control valve wire harness section.

  3. Replace the Solenoid/Pilot Head

If the solenoid failed the swap test, unbolt the faulty pilot head/solenoid from the #3 remote valve slice and install the replacement unit.

  4. Reassemble and Power Up

Reconnect the battery and turn the key switch ON.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

Access the "H" Menu (specifically the H1 menu for the AUX controller) via the tractor's diagnostic display or use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the stored 4538 fault code from the EEPROM.

  6. Reassign and Calibrate

If a new pilot head was installed, you must reassign the valve addresses so the controller knows which cab lever controls the #3 valve. Finally, perform the remote valve calibration procedure (which may require a special service tool/flow meter) to tune the new valve for proper proportional function.
