Case IH 4539 – Armrest Controller (ARM) or Electronic Hitch/Remote (EHR): Front remote no. 3 - potentiometer faulty
Issue description
The control module is receiving an out-of-range, missing, or implausible electrical signal from the potentiometer responsible for monitoring the position of the #3 front remote hydraulic valve.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
- Steiger
- Magnum (including MX / TG series)
- Maxxum
Check the cause
Isolate the component by swapping electrical connections between remote #3 and a known working remote (such as #4). If the fault moves, the valve's potentiometer is faulty; if it stays, the issue is in the armrest controller or wiring.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the armrest controller and the front remote valve stack for rubbed wires, corrosion, or bent pins.
Connect a diagnostic tool or use the tractor's display to check the potentiometer's voltage range to determine if it has fallen out of calibration.
Repair steps
Relieve hydraulic pressure
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate the faulty potentiometer
Depending on your diagnostic results, this will either be the flow control/lever potentiometer inside the armrest console or the spool position potentiometer mounted directly on the #3 front remote valve slice.
Disconnect electrical connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty potentiometer.
Remove defective potentiometer
Unbolt and remove the defective potentiometer from the valve block or armrest assembly.
Install replacement potentiometer
Install the replacement potentiometer and secure the mounting hardware.
Reconnect electrical harness
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Perform remote valve calibration
You must perform a remote valve calibration (SCV calibration) using the tractor's AFS Pro display or a dealer diagnostic tool. The controller needs to learn the new potentiometer's exact neutral, minimum, and maximum voltage positions.
Parts you might need
(3)Remote Valve Potentiometer / Flow Control Potentiometer / Spool Position Sensor
On certain older Magnum and Steiger models, the potentiometer on the valve block may not be serviceable separately from the spool valve. In these cases, replacing the entire remote valve slice is required, and you may need to update the tractor's software.
