Case IH 4541 – Armrest Controller / EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit: Front remote no. 3 - spool not in neutral at key on
Issue description
When the tractor's ignition was turned on, the control module detected that the spool for the #3 front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve was not in its centered, neutral position. This is a safety mechanism to prevent unexpected hydraulic movement at startup.

Check the cause
Ensure the control lever or joystick for Front Remote #3 on the armrest is not physically stuck, obstructed by debris, or manually locked out of the neutral position
Verify that the operator did not have their hand on the remote lever while turning the ignition key
Use the display or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other EHR error codes (e.g., CAN BUS communication errors, potentiometer failures, or voltage errors)
Check the maintenance schedule and inspect hydraulic fluid, as improper maintenance or contaminated hydraulic fluid can lead to sticking valve spools
Inspect the CAN BUS wiring and the electrical connector directly at the #3 front EHR valve for corrosion, backed-out pins, or damage
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Turn the ignition off. Ensure the remote lever is physically in neutral. Turn the key back on. If the code was caused by the operator holding the lever during startup, the code will go inactive. Clear the code and test for normal operation.
Calibrate the EHR Lever
If the code persists, the armrest controller may have lost the neutral deadband calibration. Perform the EHR lever calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor or the EST.
Inspect the Valve Spool
If calibration fails, the physical spool inside the #3 front remote valve may be stuck due to contamination. Remove the valve casing and inspect the spool. Clean the valve block and spool.
Replace the EHR Valve
If the spool is scored, the internal return spring is broken, or the internal valve electronics have failed, the EHR valve must be replaced.
Renumbering Procedure
If the EHR valve is replaced, you must perform the EHR valve renumbering/configuration procedure using the EST so the Central Controller recognizes the new valve's position on the CAN BUS.
Final Testing
Clear all error codes and actuate the #3 front remote to ensure full flow and proper return-to-neutral functionality.
