Case IH 4542 – Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) or Armrest Controller (ICU/Multi-controller): Front remote no. 4 - no control message received
Issue description
A Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication error indicating that the electronic control module mounted on the #4 front hydraulic remote valve is failing to receive command messages from the tractor's main control system. The valve defaults to a fail-safe (neutral) state, disabling the #4 front remote.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series
- Magnum Series
- Steiger Series
- MX / TG Series
Check the cause
Ensure the control lever/joystick for remote #4 is in the neutral position at key-on.
Disconnect the #4 front remote valve electrical connector and inspect for water ingress, corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals.
Verify the valve is receiving a solid 12V power supply and has a clean ground using a multimeter.
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the connector to check CAN bus continuity.
Swap the electrical connector from remote #4 with remote #3 (if equipped) to isolate the issue to either the wiring harness/main controller or the electronic actuator itself.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Remove the Actuator
Locate the #4 front remote valve slice. Disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the Allen bolts securing the electronic actuator (stepper motor/controller cap) to the mechanical valve body.
Install the New Part
Clean the mating surface on the valve body. Install the new electronic actuator, ensuring the internal spool linkage aligns correctly. Torque the retaining bolts to OEM spec.
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back in and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Perform a hydraulic remote valve calibration using the tractor's display monitor or diagnostic menu. This allows the main ECU to recognize the new valve module and learn the spool's end-of-stroke limits.
