Issue description

This code indicates a memory failure within the electronic controller for the #4 front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve. The EEPROM stores the calibration data and operational parameters for the valve spool. When this error is thrown, the module has detected a checksum failure, corrupted memory, or a complete internal memory failure, which usually forces the valve into a fail-safe (disabled) mode.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying voltage-related codes (e.g., 4546 - under voltage or 4547 - over voltage) on the same remote, as voltage spikes or severe battery drops are a primary cause of EEPROM corruption.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the front remote #4 valve slice for water ingress, damaged pins, or chafed wires that could short the CAN network or power supply.

  3. Attempt to recalibrate the valve to rewrite the EEPROM and clear the code, as the memory may simply be corrupted rather than physically damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and block the wheels.

    Ensure no implements are connected to the front remotes.

  2. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop, or insert the diagnostic switch tool (OEM Part # 380000843) into the tractor's diagnostic port.

    This accesses the 'H Menu' (Calibration Menu) on the dash display.

  3. Navigate to the EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) calibration section.

  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate front remote #4.

    This typically involves moving the in-cab remote lever fully into the extend, retract, and float positions while the system learns the spool travel limits.

  5. Cycle the key switch.

    If the code 4544 clears and the valve operates normally, the repair is complete.

  6. Relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

    Do this if the calibration fails immediately, or if the code returns upon key cycle, indicating the EEPROM chip inside the valve actuator is physically burned out.

  7. Locate the front remote valve stack.

    Identify slice #4.

  8. Disconnect the electrical harness from the #4 valve actuator.

  9. Unbolt the electronic actuator head (driver) from the hydraulic valve slice.

    Note: On some specific valve blocks, the actuator cannot be serviced separately, and the entire valve slice must be replaced.

  10. Install the new actuator/valve slice and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.

  11. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  12. Perform the EHR calibration procedure on the newly installed valve.

    Crucial so the tractor's main controller can write the new operational parameters to the new EEPROM.
