Case IH 4545 – Electronic System / EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Front remote No. 4 - switched to failsafe
Issue description
This code indicates that the controller has detected an anomaly with the 4th front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve and has disabled it, placing it into a protective "failsafe" state to prevent unintended hydraulic operation.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Case IH Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225, CVX, CVXDrive)
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH MX/TG series
- Case IH T6000 series
Check the cause
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other active fault codes related to Front Remote No. 4 (codes 4542 through 4555, or 4563). These will pinpoint the exact electrical or mechanical failure.
Inspect Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connectors at the Front Remote No. 4 valve for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.
Mechanical Check: Verify the remote valve spool is not mechanically binding and can freely return to the neutral position.
Joystick Check: Ensure the EHR joystick/control lever on the armrest is functioning properly and physically returning to neutral.
Live Data Monitoring: Access the tractor's "H Menu" / "HH Menu" diagnostic screen via the instrument cluster or use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the live potentiometer voltage readings and spool movement.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect battery power before servicing the EHR valve electrical connections.
Wiring Repair
Repair or replace any damaged wiring or corroded connectors leading to the 4th front remote valve.
Component Replacement
If the potentiometer or actuator is diagnosed as faulty (e.g., via code 4553), remove and replace the potentiometer/actuator assembly on the valve body.
Valve Servicing
If the spool is mechanically binding (indicated by codes 4548/4549), remove the valve section. Clean the spool and replace the seals. If the valve body is internally scored, the entire remote valve section must be replaced.
Reassembly
Reconnect all electrical connections securely.
Clear Codes
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or use the onboard diagnostic menu to clear the inactive fault codes.
Calibration
Perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the EST or the tractor's calibration menu. This is required so the controller can learn the new neutral, extend, and retract positions of the spool.
