Case IH 4547 – EHR (Electro Hydraulic Remote) / AUX Controller: Front remote No.4 - over voltage

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the front remote valve #4 circuit (or its corresponding control potentiometer/joystick) that is higher than the expected maximum limit. This typically indicates a short to power or an open ground in the sensor/valve circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma series
  • Magnum series
  • Maxxum series
  • Steiger / Quadtrac series
  • Optum series
  • Quantum series

Check the cause

  1. Check the live voltage/potentiometer reading for Front Remote #4 using the tractor's diagnostic mode or a diagnostic tool to see if it is stuck at a high voltage (e.g., 5V).

  2. Inspect the 4-wire CAN harness and wiring between the armrest multi-function handle/joystick and the front remote valve block for rubbed wires causing a short to power or a broken ground wire.

  3. Swap the electrical connection from remote #4 to another compatible remote to see if the over-voltage code follows the valve or stays with the armrest control/wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the engine and ensure all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic circuits before removing any caps, covers, or valves to prevent injury.

  2. Access the Faulty Component

Depending on your diagnostic results, access either the armrest controller (to replace the joystick/potentiometer) or the front remote valve block.

  3. Replace the Component

If the wiring is shorted, repair or replace the damaged harness section. If the armrest potentiometer is failed internally, replace the potentiometer or the multi-function handle encoder. If the EHR valve's internal output stage/driver is faulty, replace the remote valve section.

  4. Reassembly

Reconnect all electrical harnesses and hydraulic lines. Ensure the working area is clean to prevent contamination of the hydraulic system.

  5. Calibration

Turn the key switch ON and use the tractor's diagnostic menu to perform a hydraulic remote valve calibration. This stores the new spool movement limits and potentiometer base values in the EEPROM.
