Case IH 4548 – Electronic System / Hydraulic Controller: Front remote No. 4 - spool movement too low
Issue description
The electronic controller has commanded the spool inside the #4 front hydraulic remote valve to move, but the feedback sensor (potentiometer) is reporting that the spool has not moved far enough to reach the target position. This is typically caused by a mechanical binding of the spool, a lack of pilot hydraulic pressure, a failing actuator driver, or a defective feedback potentiometer.

Check the cause
Visual & Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the front remote #4 valve. Look for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or wire chafing, which can cause voltage drops to the actuator or skewed potentiometer signals.
Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying fault codes. For example, if code 4552 (defective actuator) or 4553 (defective potentiometer) is also present, the issue is almost certainly electrical rather than a mechanically stuck spool.
Electronic Service Tool (EST) Monitoring: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or use the tractor's onboard diagnostic display to monitor the live potentiometer voltage for remote #4. Command the valve manually and observe if the voltage changes smoothly.
Mechanical Binding Check: Swap the actuator head from remote #4 to another working remote (e.g., remote #3). If the fault follows the actuator, the actuator is bad; if the fault stays at remote #4, the hydraulic spool itself is physically binding.

Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the front remote valve stack and identify the #4 section.
Remove the Actuator
Disconnect the electrical harness from the #4 remote valve actuator. Remove the mounting screws holding the electronic actuator head to the hydraulic valve body.
Inspect the Spool
With the actuator removed, attempt to move the spool manually. It should move smoothly against its centering spring. If it is stuck or gritty, the valve section must be removed, disassembled, and cleaned (or replaced if scored).
Replace the Actuator/Potentiometer
If the spool moves freely, the fault lies in the electronic actuator head. Install a new actuator head onto the valve body and torque the mounting screws to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Calibrate
Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key on and use the tractor's calibration menu or the CNH EST software to perform a remote valve calibration. Note: The system must learn the new neutral, extend, and retract limits of the new potentiometer, or it will continue to throw spool movement codes.
