4549

Case IH 4549 – Armrest Controller (ATC / Armrest) or EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) controller: Front remote No.4 - spool movement too high

Issue description

The Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) system has detected that the internal spool of the #4 front remote valve has traveled beyond its calibrated physical range, or the potentiometer monitoring the spool's position is sending an out-of-bounds voltage signal back to the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Puma Series (115, 125, 140, 155, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (200, 235, 305, 340)
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Optum Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the pilot valve head on the EHR valve (dealer mechanics note a faulty original pilot head is the most common cause)

  2. Inspect the potentiometer on the #4 front remote valve for physical damage or electrical failure

  3. Inspect the EHR control valve wire harness for shorts, corrosion, or open circuits that could distort the potentiometer signal

  4. Check the valve spool for mechanical binding, contamination, or sticking that could cause erratic movement

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the #4 front remote valve to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system.

  2. Replace the Faulty Component

If diagnostics point to the pilot head, remove and replace the pilot valve head. If the potentiometer is faulty, unbolt and replace the potentiometer.

  3. Reassign Valve Addresses

After replacing the pilot head or potentiometer, use the tractor's display/controller to reassign the valve addresses. This ensures the controller correctly identifies which armrest lever controls the #4 valve.

  4. Perform Calibration

Use the Case IH special service tool/software to perform the EHR valve calibration procedure. This tunes the valve for proper function and teaches the controller the new physical limits of the spool.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the 4549 fault code from the Armrest/EHR controller and test the remote for proper operation.
