Case IH 4550 – Electronic System (EHR controller or AUX/Remote Valve Controller): Front remote no.4 – float position not reached

The electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) system commanded the spool valve for front remote #4 to enter the float position, but the internal potentiometer detected that the spool did not physically reach the required position. This is typically caused by a faulty potentiometer, a defective actuator (pilot head), mechanical binding of the spool valve, or a wiring issue.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the 4-pin connector going to the front remote #4 actuator (pilot head) for corrosion, loose pins, or wire chafing

   Access the tractor's diagnostic H-Menu or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the live potentiometer reading for remote #4 (erratic or out of range readings indicate a faulty potentiometer)

   Swap the electronic actuator (pilot head) from remote #4 with a known-good remote (e.g., remote #3). If the fault code changes to follow the actuator, the actuator is confirmed defective

   If the fault stays with remote #4 after the swap, check the main spool inside the valve body for mechanical sticking or binding caused by debris or scoring

   Verify if the EHR valve was recently calibrated, as a software glitch or lost calibration can cause this code

   Relieve Pressure

   Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing the valve.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Unplug the electrical connector from the front remote #4 actuator.

   Remove the Actuator

   Unbolt and remove the proportional actuator (pilot head) from the remote valve body.

   Inspect the Spool

   Manually check the main spool for free movement. If the spool is sticking, the valve body must be cleaned. If the spool or bore is heavily scored, the entire valve section will need to be replaced.

   Replace the Actuator

   If the spool moves freely, the fault lies within the actuator's internal driver/potentiometer. Install a new proportional actuator.

   Reassemble and Calibrate

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on and perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the tractor's diagnostic menu or the EST. Note: If a new pilot head is installed, calibration is strictly required for the system to learn the new potentiometer's neutral and float end-stops.
