4552

Case IH 4552 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) controller: Front remote no.4 – driver faulty

Issue description

The electronic driver circuit responsible for controlling the proportional actuator on the 4th front hydraulic remote valve has detected a failure. This is typically caused by an internal failure of the actuator's electronics, a short/open in the wiring harness, or a failure in the controller's output driver.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma Series (150, 165, 175, 180, 195, 210, 225, CVX)
  • Magnum Series (180, 190, 210, 225, 240, 255, 270)
  • Steiger Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the 4-pin electrical connector at the front remote No.4 actuator for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Check the wiring harness leading back to the EHR controller for chafing or breaks.

  3. Perform an actuator swap test by swapping the proportional actuator from remote No.4 with a known working actuator (e.g., from remote No.3). If the fault code changes to the new location, the actuator is faulty. If code 4552 persists, the issue lies in the wiring harness or the EHR controller.

  4. Access the tractor's diagnostic 'HH Menu' to view the live potentiometer readings for the remote valve to see if the controller is registering any spool movement or if the circuit is completely dead.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, and turn off the engine. Cycle the front remote No.4 control lever/joystick multiple times to relieve all trapped hydraulic pressure in the circuit.

  2. Disconnect Electronics

Locate the front remote No.4 valve assembly and disconnect the 4-pin electrical connector from the proportional actuator.

  3. Remove the Actuator

Remove the retaining bolts that secure the actuator mounting plate to the hydraulic valve body. Carefully pull the actuator away from the spool. Caution: Ensure the area is thoroughly cleaned beforehand so no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic valve body.

  4. Install the New Part

Mount the new proportional actuator onto the valve body, ensuring the mechanical linkage aligns with the valve spool. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the 4-pin electrical connector back into the new actuator.

  6. Calibration

Turn the key to the ON position. You must perform the hydraulic remote valve calibration procedure via the tractor's diagnostic system (HH Menu). This allows the EHR controller to learn the new actuator's neutral dead-band and full-travel limits. Clear the stored 4552 fault code.
