4553

Case IH 4553 – Armrest Controller / XCM processor: Front remote no. 4 - potentiometer faulty

Issue description

The control module is receiving an implausible, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the potentiometer that monitors the position of the control lever or spool for the #4 front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 225, 240, CVX)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (235, 250, 280, 290, 310, 340, 370, 380)
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Ensure that lever number 4 is physically returning to the neutral position and is not mechanically binding.

  2. Enter the tractor's diagnostic 'HH Menu' and observe the live potentiometer readings for Remote No. 4. If the voltage reading is erratic, stuck, or completely dead when moving the lever, the sensor is likely failed.

  3. Check the wiring harness between the armrest controller and the remote valve for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to an 8V/12V reference.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental hydraulic actuation.

  2. Access the Armrest Console

Remove the retaining screws on the right-hand armrest control console to expose the internal EHR levers and potentiometers.

  3. Locate Remote No. 4

Identify the linkage and potentiometer specifically assigned to the 4th remote valve.

  4. Remove the Faulty Potentiometer

Disconnect the electrical pigtail/connector. Loosen the set screw or mounting nut on the potentiometer adjusting bracket and slide the faulty potentiometer off the actuating arm/pivot.

  5. Install the New Part

Slide the new potentiometer into place, secure the mounting bracket, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reinstall the armrest covers and reconnect the battery. You must perform a remote valve calibration via the tractor's HH diagnostic menu so the Armrest Controller can learn the new potentiometer's specific neutral, full-extend, and full-retract voltage values.
