465

Case IH 465 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Wastegate 1 voltage is too high

Issue description

The engine controller is receiving a voltage signal from the turbocharger wastegate actuator (or the boost pressure modulator valve) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold, indicating an electrical fault or internal failure.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum series (MX180, MX200, MX220, MX245, MX275, MX305)
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH CF80 Cross Flow Combines

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the turbocharger wastegate actuator/boost pressure modulator valve for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short to power.

  2. Disconnect the wastegate actuator connector and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, probe the actuator connector with the key ON (engine off) to verify if the supply voltage is out of specification or if the ground circuit is open.

  4. Ensure the wastegate linkage rod is not mechanically seized, as internal motor binding against a stuck valve can throw out-of-range voltage codes.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Turbocharger

Locate the turbocharger assembly and the attached electronic wastegate actuator (often mounted near the thermostat housing or directly on the turbo compressor housing).

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the wastegate actuator.

  4. Remove the Actuator

Remove the retaining clip/circlip (e.g., OEM part J528221) securing the actuator link rod to the wastegate arm. Remove the mounting bolts securing the actuator bracket to the turbocharger.

  5. Install the New Actuator

Mount the replacement actuator and attach the linkage rod. Note: Depending on the turbo manufacturer (Garrett/Holset), the actuator rod may require a specific pre-load adjustment during installation so the valve does not leak or over-boost.

  6. Reconnect

Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

Connect the EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port, clear the ENG 465 fault code, and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
