Case IH 466 – ENG (Engine Controller / Engine ECU): Wastegate 1 voltage is too low

Issue description

The Engine Controller has detected a voltage signal from the Wastegate 1 control circuit (actuator or solenoid) that has fallen below the expected operational threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or an internal failure (short/open) within the wastegate actuator solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the turbocharger wastegate actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the wastegate solenoid and check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins, which can cause voltage drops.

  3. Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the signal and ground wires between the ECU and the wastegate actuator connector to verify there is no short to ground.

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the wastegate solenoid. If the reading shows an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short (zero resistance), the solenoid has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Locate the Component

    Locate the wastegate actuator/solenoid, which is mounted on or directly adjacent to the turbocharger assembly.

  3. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring, splice and repair the harness using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.

  4. Actuator Replacement

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the wastegate actuator. Remove the retaining clips, linkage, and mounting bolts securing the actuator to the turbocharger bracket. Install the new wastegate actuator/solenoid and secure the mounting hardware. Reattach the mechanical linkage to the wastegate valve.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical pigtail to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or an equivalent diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive fault code 466. Run the engine under load to ensure the code does not return and that boost pressure is regulating normally.
