47

Case IH 47 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission ECM: CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH (1) SET TOO HIGH

Issue description

The Clutch Pedal Potentiometer reads above 15% for 1 second while the Power Shuttle FNR lever is not in neutral and the clutch pedal is released. The transmission is disabled or limited, and the ECM will only allow the Synchronizer Shuttle (Reverse) Solenoid to function.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • TN Series
  • T8000
  • MX series
  • TG series
  • Magnum series (235-370)
  • MXM series (120-190)
  • Maxxum
  • 5120
  • 5130
  • 5140
  • 5150
  • 7200

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Code: Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm if the active code is actually 47 (Clutch Switch) or a specific Reverse Solenoid code (such as 2351, TRANS 112, or E39).

  2. Check the Clutch Potentiometer (Code 47 cause): Verify if the clutch pedal potentiometer is reading above 15% when the pedal is fully released.

  3. Check Voltages (Reverse Solenoid fault cause): Test the voltage at the reverse solenoid. A healthy circuit should show around 11V-12V at the solenoid.

  4. Inspect Wiring and Grounds: Check for faulty wiring or an open circuit between the Power Shuttle FNR lever and the ECM. Inspect the main ground cable on the left-hand side of the engine to the frame, as bad grounds can throw low-voltage transmission faults.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Limp Mode

If diagnosing Code 47, cycle the Power Shuttle FNR Lever or the Clutch Pedal to temporarily re-enable the transmission.

  2. Adjust the Switch

If diagnosing Code 47, adjust the external levers, relay rods, and the clutch pedal bottom switch so it reads correctly when released.

  3. Inspect the Solenoid

If diagnosing a reverse solenoid ground fault, locate the differential power shift (forward/reverse) solenoid on the transmission valve block.

  4. Test/Replace the Solenoid

Disconnect the 2-pin connector and test the solenoid coil for continuity. If the coil is shorted to ground or open, remove the retaining nut/bolt, slide the old coil off the valve cartridge, and install the replacement reverse solenoid coil.

  5. Recalibrate the Transmission

After replacing transmission components or adjusting the clutch switch, perform a clutch calibration procedure. Note: The tractor must be running and the transmission oil temperature must be above 60°C (140°F) for the calibration to execute properly.
