Case IH 4732 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Right Swash Plate Angle Sensor Pin A Shorted To Power

Issue description

The control module is detecting a voltage on Pin A of the right swash plate angle sensor circuit that is higher than the expected normal operating range. This is typically caused by the sensor's signal wire shorting directly to a power source (such as a 5V reference or 12V battery voltage) either internally within the sensor or externally in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the right swash plate angle sensor on the bottom of the hydrostatic travel pumps by following the hydraulic hoses from the right travel motor back to the tandem hydrostatic pump.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor for any areas where the wire insulation may have rubbed through, melted, or pinched against the chassis, causing Pin A to short to a power wire.

  3. Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector and inspect it for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins, which can bridge connections and cause a short.

  4. With the sensor disconnected, turn the key ON and use a digital multimeter to check the voltage at Pin A on the harness side. If it shows full reference or battery voltage, the short is in the wiring harness. If the harness tests fine, the sensor itself has an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms (or engage the mechanical lift cylinder lock), turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical shorts.

  2. Locate sensor

    Access the tandem hydrostatic pump compartment and locate the right swash plate angle sensor on the bottom of the pump.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system when the sensor is removed.

  4. Unplug connector

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove sensor

    Remove the mounting screws holding the sensor to the pump housing and pull the old sensor out.

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new swash plate angle sensor into the pump housing and tighten the mounting screws (reuse the old screws or procure new ones locally, as they are not supplied with the sensor).

  7. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear fault code

    Turn the key to the ON position and use your diagnostic tool (or the machine's instrument cluster) to clear the stored 4732 fault code.

  10. Test machine

    Start the machine and test the right-side ground drive functions to ensure the swash plate is responding correctly to joystick commands and the code does not return. (Note: Depending on the machine's software version, an EH calibration procedure may be required after replacing hydrostatic drive sensors).
