Case IH 4741 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Left Swash Plate Angle Sensor - Pin A Open Or Shorted To Ground

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the signal voltage from Pin A of the left hydrostatic pump's swash plate angle sensor has dropped below the minimum threshold, meaning the circuit is either physically broken (open) or the wire is shorting directly to the chassis ground.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR130
  • SR150
  • SR175
  • SV185
  • SR200
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR270
  • TR320
  • TV380
  • L213
  • L215
  • L218
  • L220
  • L223
  • L225
  • L230
  • C227
  • C232
  • C238

Check the cause

  1. Locate the swash plate angle sensor on the bottom of the left Bosch Rexroth A22VG hydrostatic travel pump.

  2. Inspect connector X-94 for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  3. Use a multimeter to check continuity of Pin A's wire from the sensor connector back to the UCM, and check for continuity to ground to verify if the wire is chafed and shorting against the frame.

  4. Verify the adjustment for mechanical neutral in the left-hand pump drive circuit.

  5. Inspect hydraulic fluid for heavy contamination or a 'milky' appearance (water intrusion), which can cause erratic pump behavior.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the machine on a level surface. Raise the loader arms and securely engage the loader arm mechanical lock pins. Lower the arms to rest the weight on the pins.

  2. Access the Pumps

Turn off the engine and disconnect the battery. Remove the engine area body panels and belly pans as necessary to gain access to the hydrostatic pumps.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the X-94 electrical connector from the left swash plate angle sensor. Remove the retaining screws holding the sensor to the pump housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new swash plate angle sensor into the pump, ensuring it seats properly into the slot of the internal positioning pin.

  5. Secure and Reconnect

Install the retaining screws (screws are often not serviced with the sensor and must be reused or procured locally). Reconnect the X-94 electrical connector.

  6. Calibration

Perform the 'Swash plate angle sensor test and centering procedure' using the OEM Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to calibrate the new sensor to the UCM.

  7. Test

Clear the fault codes, reinstall all panels, and test drive the machine to ensure the code does not return and the machine tracks straight.

Parts you might need
