Case IH 4782 – UCM: Solenoid Valve Supply Shorted To Ground

Issue description

The electrical supply wire providing power to the two-speed hydraulic solenoid valve has found an unintended path to ground (a short circuit), which prevents the solenoid from energizing and operating the two-speed drive function.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR175
  • 450
  • 465
  • 450CT

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the two-speed solenoid valve. Look for chafed, pinched, or melted wire insulation that may be touching the machine's metal frame (ground).

  2. Disconnect the two-speed solenoid and inspect the electrical connector for water ingress, corrosion, or damaged pins.

  3. Test the solenoid coil itself. Use a multimeter to check if the coil is internally shorted to its own metal casing.

  4. With the solenoid and UCM disconnected, test the supply wire for continuity to ground to isolate whether the short is in the harness or the component itself.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, lower any attachments to the ground, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Locate the two-speed solenoid valve on the primary hydraulic power system / drive circuit.

  3. If the diagnostic tests revealed a wiring harness issue, repair the shorted section of the wire and wrap it securely in protective loom to prevent future chafing.

  4. If the solenoid coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut or clip holding the coil to the valve stem.

  5. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve.

  6. Install the new two-speed solenoid coil.

Be careful not to cross-thread the retaining nut when installing the new solenoid, as this can cause the valve to seat improperly or leak.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.

  8. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes from the UCM, and test the machine's two-speed function to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Two-Speed Solenoid Valve / Coil

Exact part number varies depending on the specific skid steer or track loader model. Reference the specific machine's parts catalog using its PIN/serial number to order the correct two-speed solenoid. Ensure the replacement solenoid matches the brand/specifications of the original valve block.
