Case IH 48 – Transmission ECM: Clutch Pedal Switch (1) Set Too Low
Issue description
This indicates a mismatch between the clutch pedal switch state and the clutch pedal potentiometer reading. Specifically, the fault triggers if, for 1 second, the Clutch Pedal Potentiometer reads below 5% while the Power Shuttle FNR (Forward/Neutral/Reverse) lever is in neutral, the clutch pedal is depressed, and the clutch pedal switch is open.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- JXC
- Case IH Farmall
- Case IH Maxxum
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH MXU
Check the cause
Perform a potentiometer sweep test to ensure the reading does not drop below 5% when the pedal is fully depressed.
Check Transmission ECM Connector 2, Pin 18 with the FNR lever in neutral (should not have 12 volts).
Check Transmission ECM Connector 1, Pin 15 with the clutch pedal depressed and the switch open (should not have 12 volts).
Inspect the wiring harness leading from the clutch pedal switches to the Transmission ECM for chafing or a short to a 12V power source.
Check the physical mounting of the clutch pedal switch and potentiometer to ensure they haven't vibrated loose or shifted out of alignment.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Pedal Assembly
Remove the lower dash/console panels to access the clutch pedal linkage, switch, and potentiometer.
Adjust or Replace the Switch/Potentiometer
If the switch is physically misaligned, loosen the mounting bracket, adjust it so it properly engages/disengages with the pedal travel, and retighten. If the switch or potentiometer failed the diagnostic voltage/sweep tests, disconnect the wiring pigtail, unbolt the faulty sensor, and install the replacement part.
Inspect and Repair Wiring
If the sensors are good but 12V was found on the ECM pins during the diagnostic phase, trace the harness back to the ECM and repair any shorted wires.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. After replacing or adjusting the clutch pedal switch or potentiometer, you must perform a transmission/clutch pedal calibration procedure using the tractor's dash menu or diagnostic tool so the ECM learns the new 0-100% travel limits.
