Case IH 482 – Engine ECU: Fuel Pressure Sensor voltage low
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the measured fuel pressure has dropped below the normal operational range (less than 4.5 bar on the low-pressure side), indicating a fuel starvation issue that can cause the engine to run rough, lose power, back down in RPMs, or shut down completely.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Steiger series (375, 450, 500, 535)
- Quadtrac series
- Magnum series
Check the cause
Perform a mechanical pressure test by installing a mechanical fuel gauge in the line going to the engine to verify actual fuel pressure.
Inspect the hidden inline screen located inside a hex-shaped stub on the left-hand (LH) side of the motor, on the fuel line going to the cooler.
Check the fuel tank breather for blockages and drain a small amount of fuel from the bottom of the tank to check for debris blocking the drain or primary pickup screen.
Verify the electronic primer/lift pump is running and successfully pumping fuel (should not take over 1.5 minutes to prime).
Inspect the integrated fuel system module (IFSM) for a damaged or sticking anti-drainback valve located directly above the fuel lift pump.
Repair steps
Resolve Fuel Restrictions
Replace the primary and secondary fuel filters (e.g., the standard Case IH 10-micron filter).
Clean the Hidden Screen
Remove the fuel line on the LH side of the engine going to the cooler, unscrew the housing, and thoroughly clean the inline primary screen.
Clear Tank Blockages
If the tank breather is plugged, replace it. If debris is found in the tank, drain and flush the tank to ensure free-flowing fuel to the lift pump.
Replace Faulty Delivery Components
If the filters and screens are clean but mechanical pressure remains low, replace the electronic lift pump/transfer pump.
Replace the Sensor
If mechanical fuel pressure tests within the normal specification (above 4.5 bar) but the ECM still logs Code 482, the fuel pressure sensor itself has failed and must be replaced.
Clear the Code
To validate the repair, perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute. The ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.
