Case IH 49 – Armrest Controller: Aux 3rd remote valve LEVER potentiometer is failed.

The electronic sensor (potentiometer) that monitors the physical position of the 3rd electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) lever in the cab is sending an erratic, out-of-range, or missing signal to the computer. The system cannot accurately determine if the operator is commanding the 3rd remote valve to raise, lower, float, or stay in neutral.

   Check if the 3rd remote lever is physically sticking or failing to return to the exact center (neutral) position.

   Check the A-post display neutral light. If the green cylinder light for the 3rd remote stays on when the lever is physically in neutral, pull the switch slightly back to see if the light goes out, which confirms the potentiometer is out of calibration or failing.

   Attempt the EHR calibration procedure via the A-post menu to rule out a simple calibration drift before replacing parts: Hold the 'PROG' key in while turning the ignition key to the ON position, navigate the A-post menu to find the ARM section and select the calibration mode, pull the levers fully back, then fully forward, then let them return to neutral, turn off the key and wait at least 30 seconds before restarting the tractor to save the calibration.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting any armrest CAN-bus components.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the upper housing/cover plates of the armrest console to expose the remote valve control levers.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Locate the 3rd remote valve lever and carefully unplug its wiring harness connector.

   Remove the Component

   Remove the mounting screws/brackets holding the lever assembly. On some models, the potentiometer can be unbolted from the side of the lever. On newer models, the entire lever switch assembly is a sealed unit and must be replaced as a whole.

   Install the New Part

   Mount the new potentiometer or lever assembly and reconnect the wiring harness.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the armrest console covers.

   Recalibrate

   Reconnect the battery. You must perform the EHR calibration procedure (detailed in the diagnostic steps above) so the Armrest Controller can learn the exact voltage values for the new sensor's forward, back, and neutral positions.
