Case IH 493 – Engine Control Module (ENG / ECM): The Injection Control Identifier Circuit in the harness has failed

Issue description

The ECM detects an open circuit, a short to ground, or a pin-to-pin short in the Injection Control Valve Identifier Circuit (calibration trim circuit), preventing it from verifying the CAPS fuel pump's calibration.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • STX440
  • STX450
  • Steiger 485
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • 2344
  • 2366
  • 2377
  • 2388

Check the cause

  1. Unplug the CAPS pump wiring harness and plug it back in. Check for loose, backed-out, or corroded pins at the connector.

  2. Perform continuity and resistance checks on the wire harness between the ECM and the Injection Control Valve. Specifically, check for shorts to ground, pin-to-pin opens, and pin-to-pin shorts.

  3. Inspect the harness routing near the engine block for rub points, chafing, or vibration damage, which frequently causes this circuit to fail.

Repair steps

  1. Power down system

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the unswitched battery power to prevent electrical spikes to the ECM.

  2. Access the CAPS pump

Locate the CAPS fuel pump and the Injection Control Valve (ICV) wiring harness on the side of the engine block.

  3. Repair or replace harness

If diagnostic tests reveal a short or break in the harness, repair the damaged section. Use high-quality butt connectors with heat shrink (flameless shrink jet tool recommended) to seal the connection against moisture and vibration.

  4. Install upfit kit

If the harness connector is heavily damaged, cut off the old connector and splice in a new Cummins/Case IH electrical repair connector kit.

  5. Replace ICV or pump

If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine (no shorts or opens) and the pin tension is good, the failure is internal to the Injection Control Valve. Replace the ICV or the complete CAPS pump assembly.

  6. Clear codes

Reconnect battery power, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic service tool (or onboard display) to clear the inactive fault codes.
