5001

Case IH 5001 – Rear PTO Controller, Armrest Controller, or Transmission Control Unit (TCU): PTO Switch in ON Position During Power-Up

Issue description

Fault code 5001 indicates a safety interlock violation: the Rear PTO cab switch, Auto PTO switch, or PTO remote fender switch is in the "ON" position during tractor power-up. The system flags this to prevent the Power Take-Off (PTO) from engaging unexpectedly when the operator turns the ignition key, which could cause equipment damage or severe injury.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger & STX Series
  • Case IH MX Series (MX180-MX270)
  • Case IH Maxxum, Puma, and MXU Series

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Verify that the main PTO cab switch, the Auto PTO switch (if equipped), and the remote fender PTO switches are all physically in the "OFF" position before turning the key.

  2. Power Cycle: Turn the switches off, cycle the tractor's ignition key off, and turn it back on to see if the code clears.

  3. Switch Testing: If the code persists with all switches physically off, a switch may have failed internally (stuck closed). Disconnect the switches one by one and use a multimeter to test for continuity.

  4. Wiring Inspection: Check the wiring harness leading to the cab and fender switches for a short to power.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off ignition and disconnect battery

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery ground if working on the electrical harness.

  2. Identify faulty switch

Identify the faulty switch (cab, auto, or fender) based on your multimeter continuity tests.

  3. Access faulty switch

Carefully pry off the armrest console trim, dashboard panel, or rear fender housing to access the back of the faulty switch.

  4. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the electrical spade/pin connector from the switch.

  5. Remove faulty switch

Unclip or unbolt the faulty PTO switch from its mounting location and remove it.

  6. Install new switch

Snap or bolt the new OEM replacement switch into place.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Verify repair

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition key to the ON position (without starting the engine), and verify that fault code 5001 is no longer active.
