Case IH 5001 – Transmission Controller or Central Control Module (CCM): Rear PTO Brake Solenoid Error

Issue description

Rear PTO brake solenoid is "stuck off," which is typically caused by the circuit shorting to ground or a module failure.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum Series (110, 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • MXM Series
  • MXU Series (MXU100, MXU110, MXU115, MXU125, MXU130, MXU135)
  • Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225, 260 CVX)
  • Farmall Series (40, 45, 50, 95U, 105U, 115U Pro)
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness for physical damage, such as rodent damage, which is a common cause of shorts to ground

  2. Inspect the switch connectors to ensure no pins have been pushed back or corroded

  3. Test Wire 2130 (Brown) for the PTO Brake Solenoid signal and Wire 57 (Black) for the earth/ground connection to ensure there is no open circuit or short to ground

  4. Verify that oil is flowing correctly from the priority valve to the low-pressure distributor block (applicable to models like the Puma CVX)

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

The location of the PTO brake solenoid varies by transmission type. It is commonly found on the rear right-hand top of the transmission or integrated directly into the low-pressure distributor block.

  2. Disconnect the Harness

Disconnect the electrical connector (often labeled X277 or X278) from the Rear PTO brake solenoid.

  3. Test the Solenoid

Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil using a multimeter to determine if the coil has failed internally.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

If the solenoid tests out of specification or is mechanically stuck, remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty solenoid valve from the transmission housing or distributor block. Install the new OEM solenoid and torque to factory specifications.

  5. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reconnect the wiring harness. Clear the fault codes from the CCM/Transmission controller and perform a Rear PTO calibration procedure if required by the specific model's service manual.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Rear PTO Brake Solenoid (or Low-Pressure Distributor Block Assembly)

Consult the CNH Original Parts catalog using the machine's specific PIN/Serial Number to obtain the exact 8-digit CNH part number. Always use genuine 'CNH Original Parts' or 'CASE IH Parts' to guarantee proper CAN-bus resistance values and hydraulic pressure ratings.
