Case IH 5002 – Rear PTO Control Module: Rear PTO brake output - short circuit to 12V / Rear PTO brake solenoid stuck on

Issue description

The control module is detecting a continuous 12-volt signal on the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) brake solenoid circuit when it should not be present. This condition is typically caused by the wiring harness shorting to a 12V power source, or an internal failure (short circuit) within the solenoid itself, which can cause the PTO brake to remain stuck in the 'on' position.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Rear PTO brake solenoid and wiring harness for chafing, rubbing, or pinched wires that could be shorting to a 12V source.

  2. Disconnect the PTO brake solenoid connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, damage, pushed-back pins, or moisture.

  3. With the key ON and the PTO switch OFF, use a multimeter to check the solenoid control wire for voltage. If 12V is present, there is a short to power in the harness.

  4. Measure the resistance (ohms) across the PTO brake solenoid coil pins. If the resistance shows continuity/zero ohms, the solenoid is internally shorted.

  5. Verify that the PTO cab switch and any fender-mounted remote PTO switches are not physically stuck or shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and remove the key from the ignition.

  2. Locate the Component

    Locate the Rear PTO brake solenoid valve on the transmission housing.

  3. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a short to 12V in the wiring harness, trace the wire back from the solenoid connector. Splice and solder the damaged section of the wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

  4. Solenoid Replacement

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the PTO brake solenoid. Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off (or unthread the entire cartridge valve if replacing the whole assembly, being prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid). Install the new PTO brake solenoid/coil and tighten it to OEM torque specifications.

  5. Reassembly & Testing

    Reconnect the electrical connector. Turn the tractor on, use the tractor's diagnostic display or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 5002 fault code, and test the PTO engagement and braking functions to ensure the code does not return.
